How to sign a PDF without printing it

Open Sign PDF, upload the PDF, click "Add Signature", draw your signature with a mouse, trackpad or finger, click where it should go, and press "Save & Download". Nothing is uploaded until you save.

Step by step

1. Open the Sign PDF tool and choose your PDF. It appears in your browser right away.
2. Click "Add Signature". A box opens where you draw your signature.
3. Draw it with your mouse, trackpad or finger, then click Insert.
4. Click the spot on the page where the signature should sit. Move between pages with the arrows if the signature line is on a later page.
5. To add a date or a printed name, use "Add Text" and type it next to the signature.
6. Click "Save & Download". Your signed PDF is ready to send.

How it works

The page is drawn in your browser, so you see exactly where the signature will land. The PDF is sent to our server only when you click Save & Download, which is when the signature is written into the file.

What a drawn signature is good for

• Everyday forms, letters, permission slips and informal agreements.
• Returning a signed document without a printer or scanner.
• It places an image of your signature on the page. It does not include the identity checks or audit trail that some legal e-signature services provide, so check whether the recipient requires one.

Tips for a neat result

• Draw slowly and a little larger than you think you need. You can place it again if it is not right.
• On a phone or tablet, draw with your finger and then tap the page to place it.
• If the same document needs the signature on several pages, move to each page and place it again before saving.
• On a Mac, Preview has its own signature tool in the Markup toolbar.
